I often feel that, in my work with babies and young children, I must exemplify and model the best ways of relating to children and to a large degree I suppose I do do that... except with my own children that is...
Some of you will have witnessed the time I brought my younger son, Jude, to a session at Kingsdown Leisure Centre (which I had done on several occasions as he loves the sessions). On this particular occasion he had the most spectacular meltdown so I had to deal with a very fractious child and manage the class which was pretty tricky to say the least! On top of that I felt that I had to model good methods in dealing with such outbursts which only added to the tension!
Any of you who work with children will know that that is much much easier to do with someone else's children who don't quite know your 'buttons'! The upshot was that several of the parents were delighted to know that my children behaved like this too!
